Families Find New Ways to Celebrate Halloween

Halloween Decorations

Halloween celebrations are expanding beyond costumes and collecting sweets from neighbours. A 2026 survey from the US National Retail Federation found that 74 per cent of consumers planned to celebrate the holiday. However, greater popularity does not mean everyone is following the same traditions. In an October report, the organisation explained that families with young children were more likely than adults overall to plan visits to themed events, including pumpkin patches and community celebrations. Shopping is also becoming an activity in itself. Around 34 per cent of families with young children said they planned to enjoy Halloween by browsing seasonal displays or themed stores. These findings suggest that, for some families, the experience includes outings and shared activities as well as dressing up.

The celebration is also stretching beyond October 31. Almost half of consumers surveyed said they planned to start Halloween shopping in September or earlier. Some early shoppers wanted to spread their spending across a longer period, while others simply looked forward to the season. This creates opportunities for businesses, but it also raises questions about how much shopping should shape a family tradition. Visiting a colourful store display can provide entertainment without requiring a purchase, although attractive products may tempt visitors to spend. Families could instead organise a costume swap, make decorations together, or arrange games with friends. These alternatives offer different ways to participate, depending on people's budgets and interests. The changing celebration leaves families to decide which activities deserve their time and money.
