With hammer, shovel and disinfectant sprayer in hand, President Lee Myung-bak wrapped up his first visit to Africa with a working weekend in Ethiopia, a gesture, he said, to show Korea’s sincerity to be a good friend and partner of the continent. The Blue House said Lee spent five hours yesterday participating in a project to improve living conditions in a village near the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, helping build a public lavatory and community center. Lee’s aides also pitched in, helping build a medical center and setting up fences around wells in the village while the president’s two doctors provided free medical treatment to the residents, the presidential office said. A day earlier, Lee, wearing a mask and carrying a disinfectant tank on his back, sprayed into sewage and public toilets in Kebena, a less-developed village in Addis Ababa, the office said. First lady Kim Yoon-ok joined Lee in some of the volunteer work during the weekend, the office also said. The president of a country participating in volunteer manual work during an overseas trip is unprecedented, said a Blue House official. “Korea, when it helps others, cannot help with a large amount of money,” Lee said during a meeting with volunteer workers yesterday. “Many advanced countries and China give a lot [to Africa], but our help could be evaluated highly if our affection, sincerity and thoughtfulness for others are contained in it.” Such gestures continued when he visited hospitals in the capital city to console patients and meet with medical staff there. He also met People to People, an amateur football team comprised of students from Kebena, and donated football gear. Attending a workshop held at a hotel he stayed at, Lee discussed with the participants Korea’s experiences in achieving industrialization and democratization. Lee, who has been on a 10-day trip to Africa, also stressed Korea’s desire to be a good partner during visits to South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lee’s visit was only the third trip to the continent by a Korean president. “Korea and Africa will move together toward the future,” Lee told reporters, declaring that this year will be the year for Korea begins to strengthen cooperation with Africa. He said Korea has the ability to help Africa, citing his recent trip to Uganda, where the Ugandan president showed him a clean street and said it was the result of copying Korea’s Saemaeul Movement - a 1970s push to modernize the Korean economy. “For African countries trying to rise from the wounds of internal wars, Korea, with its experience of turning the ruins of the Korean War into an advanced economy, provides a good role model,” Ban said. By Ko Jung-ae, Moon Gwang-lip [joe@joongang.co.kr] 한글 관련 기사 [중앙일보] MB, 소독약통 지고 마스크 쓰고 … 아디스아바바 달동네 1시간 방역 에티오피아 방문 중 이례적 봉사활동 이명박 대통령은 서울로 떠나는 10일(현지시간) 에티오피아의 오로미아주 가레 아레라 마을에서 3시간여 동안 머물렀다. 수도 아디스아바바에서 서쪽으로 90㎞쯤 떨어진 이곳에선 대부분의 아이들이 맨발로 진흙길을 거닐 정도로 낙후된 곳이었다. 이 대통령은 직접 곡괭이를 들고 널빤지를 이어 지은 보건소 외벽 해체작업을 했다. 동료 봉사요원들에게 널빤지를 떼어내는 요령도 알려줬다. 그러다 “내가 완전 십장(작업반장)이다. 십장”이란 농담을 던지기도 했다. 청와대 참모 등 일행도 동네 곳곳에서 삽을 들고 땀을 흘렸다. 이 대통령은 이날 “우리가 다해주는 건 주민들에게 진정한 도움을 주는 게 아니다. 스스로 자립할 수 있도록 해주는 게 중요하다”고 강조했다. 이 대통령은 9일에도 아디스아바바의 대표적 ‘달동네’인 케베나 마을을 찾았다. 한 시간여 직접 소독약통을 짊어지고 마스크를 착용한 채 “일하지 않을 사람은 따라오지도 말라”며 마을 구석구석을 돌았다. 이 대통령의 부인 김윤옥 여사도 두 차례 봉사활동에 동참했고, 2009년 6월부터 지원해 온 에티오피아 어린이(9)를 직접 만나기도 했다. 최윤식(양방)·류봉하(한방) 대통령 주치의도 진료 지원을 했다. 이 대통령은 현지 봉사활동과 관련, “실은 나하고 집사람 둘이서 어디 가서 봉사한다는 생각으로 왔다”고 했다. 이 대통령은 실제 참모들에게 “험한 데에서 제대로 봉사하고 싶다”고 해서 봉사활동 예정지가 세 차례나 바뀌기도 했다고 한다. 그러나 국가 정상이 해외 순방 중 이 대통령과 같이 봉사활동을 하는 것은 이례적이다. 청와대 한 관계자는 “외국에 그런 선례가 있다는 말을 듣지 못했다”고 했다. 이 대통령은 봉사단원들과 만남에서 직접 봉사활동에 나선 배경을 설명했다. 그는 “선진국과 중국은 지원 규모가 크지만 대한민국은 남을 도울 때 큰 액수로 도울 수 없다”며 “우리가 봉사할 때 애정과 진정성, 상대를 배려하는 마음을 포함하면 적은 재정 지원을 갖고도 높은 평가를 받을 수 있다”는 얘기를 했다. 정서적 접근법을 통해 아프리카에 다가가겠다는 의미다. 여기엔 1990년대 중반부터 아프리카 공략을 본격화한 중국·일본 등의 물량 공세에 맞서선 계속 뒤처질 수밖에 없다는 현실인식도 깔려 있다. 이 대통령은 이번 방문을 통해 아프리카를 본격적으로 공략할 의지도 보였다. 그는 “대한민국은 아프리카와 함께 미래를 향해 나아가겠다”며 “올해가 대아프리카 협력 강화의 원년”이라고 했다. 청와대 고위 관계자는 “우리가 그간 아프리카에 소홀했던 게 틀림없다”며 “새로운 성장동력을 찾기 위해 이제는 아프리카로 눈을 돌릴 필요가 있다”고 말했다. |
