홀로코스트와 일본군 위안부의 만남

NEW YORK - Koreans in New York have found in the Jewish community an ally to help shed light on sexual slavery committed by the Japanese in the 20th century. The Harriet and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center - which raises awareness of the consequences of prejudice, racism and stereotyping - has a new exhibition in memory of the so-called “comfort women.” Set to run from Aug. 11 to Sept. 18, the exhibition is a first for the center on the theme. “The Holocaust Center plays a centerpiece role in the Jewish community in the United States,” said Kim Dong-seok, an adviser to the Korean American Voters’ Council (KAVA), “and holding a comfort women exhibition here in the center means that mainstream American society is acknowledging the humanitarian crimes committed by the Japanese military and denouncing them.” About 40 paintings by Korean and American painters as well as by several Korean comfort women will be exhibited, the center said, with other visual records of the comfort women and documentaries to be showcased. Lectures will also be arranged during the exhibition, it said. Part of Queensborough Community College, the center also plans a reception for leaders in the political and art communities in New York on Aug. 15 - Korea’s Liberation Day that commemorates freedom from Japan’s 35-year colonial rule. While up to 200,000 women from Korea, China and other Asian Pacific countries were forced into sexual slavery for Japanese soldiers during World War II, Tokyo has come under criticism for taking insufficient responsibility. In July 2007, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution demanding Japan’s formal acknowledgment and apology “in a clear and unequivocal manner.” The center has published 25,000 copies of educational materials about humanitarian crimes around the world. It recently shed light on the Nanking Massacre in China, distributing 5,000 educational materials on the incident to junior high and high schools across the United States. Kim said KAVA is discussing with the center to distribute materials on the comfort women to American schools. Steve Cavallo, an American painter who is among the participants in the exhibition, said he wished the exhibition would provide the momentum to raise public awareness of comfort women in the United States and highlight Japan’s lacking admission and apology over the issue. Organizers said the idea for the exhibition was hatched when the head of the Holocaust Center was introduced to KAVA officials by Representative Gary Ackerman, a Democratic congressman from New York. Ackerman played a significant role in the U.S. House resolution on comfort women in 2007. By Jung Kyung-min, Moon Gwang-lip [joe@joongang.co.kr] 한글 관련 기사 [중앙일보] 뉴욕 홀로코스트센터‘위안부 참상’고발 내일부터 추모 전시회 미국 주류사회에 막강한 영향력을 미치는 유대인 커뮤니티의 심장부인 뉴욕 홀로코스트센터에서 일본군 위안부 추모 전시회가 열린다. 홀로코스트센터는 독일 나치 치하의 유대인 대량학살을 고발하기 위해 유대인 커뮤니티가 세계 곳곳에 세운 기념관의 하나다. 광복 66주년을 기념하는 이번 전시회는 뉴욕 퀸스 커뮤니티 칼리지 내 홀로코스트센터에서 11일(현지시간)부터 9월 18일까지 열릴 예정이다. 홀로코스트센터에서 일본군 위안부 전시회가 열리는 건 이번이 처음이다. 뉴욕에서 한인유권자 권리운동을 벌이고 있는 한인유권자센터(KAVC) 김동석 고문은 8일 “홀로코스트센터에서 일본군 위안부 전시회를 여는 건 사실상 미국 주류사회가 일본군의 반인륜 범죄를 인정하고 규탄하는 의미가 있다”고 설명했다. 김 고문은 “올해는 일본군 위안부의 실상을 고발하는 예술작품 전시회를 열고 내년에는 관련 교육자료를 만들어 미 전역 중·고교에 보급할 계획”이라고 말했다. 전시회에선 뉴욕에서 활동하고 있는 한·미 화가 7명과 위안부 할머니가 직접 그린 그림 40여 점이 선보인다. 아울러 위안부의 참상을 보여 주는 화보 전시와 다큐멘터리 영상물 상영 및 강연회도 개최될 예정이다. 광복절인 15일엔 홀로코스트센터에서 뉴욕시 주요 인사들이 참석하는 리셉션도 열린다. 출품 작품은 일본군 위안부 고발에 앞장서 온 현지 화가 스티브 카발로(Steve Cavallo)가 동료 한국화가 6명과 의기투합해 모았다. 뉴저지주 한인타운인 팰리세이드파크시 도서관의 수석 사서이기도 한 그는 1991년 처음 일본군 위안부 이야기를 듣고 관심을 갖기 시작했다. 12년 전 한국인 아내를 맞이한 뒤 2008년엔 서울의 위안부 쉼터까지 찾아가 할머니들과 생활하며 일본대사관 앞 시위에도 참가했다. 지난해 10월 서구 국가에선 처음으로 팰리세이드파크시에 세운 일본군 위안부 기림비도 그가 디자인했다. 그는 “독일 나치 치하의 홀로코스트 희생자와 일본군 위안부 할머니는 동시대의 반인륜 범죄 피해자”라며 “이번 전시회가 미국 주류사회에 일본군 위안부의 진상을 알리고 일본이 아직도 이를 공식적으로 인정하거나 사과하지 않았다는 사실을 고발하는 계기가 됐으면 한다”고 말했다. 이번 전시회는 한인유권자센터가 끈질기게 홀로코스트센터를 설득해 이끌어냈다. 계기는 한인유권자센터가 2007년 미 연방하원에서 일본군 위안부 결의안을 통과시키는 과정에서 우연히 찾아왔다. 당시 결의안 통과에 가장 열성적으로 나섰던 인물은 게리 애커먼 뉴욕주 민주당 하원의원이었다. 그의 고문이었던 아서 플러그 박사가 퀸스 커뮤니티 칼리지 홀로코스트센터의 소장으로 부임하자 애커먼 의원이 한인유권자센터에 그를 소개했다. 난징(南京) 대학살 전시회도 기획했던 플러그 박사는 일본군 위안부의 진상을 알고 난 뒤 유대인 커뮤니티 설득에 직접 나서 주기도 했다. 퀸스 커뮤니티 칼리지 홀로코스트센터는 미 전역 중·고교에 유대인 학살은 물론 전 세계 반인륜 범죄를 고발하는 교육자료를 매년 2만5000부씩 보급하는 기관으로 정평이 나 있다. 최근엔 일본군이 자행한 중국 난징(南京) 대학살의 참상을 보여 주는 순회 전시회를 열고 관련 교육자료 5000여 부를 전국 중·고교에 보내기도 했다. |
