The family of a female student sexually assaulted by three male Korea University medical school students has called for the school to expel the students with no chance of returning.

The call comes amid speculation that the school may not punish them with the harshest disciplinary measures, which will allow the three to eventually re-enter the school.

A sister of the victim said in a radio interview Wednesday that the university should remove the offenders from the school and never let them come back.

“At Korea University, those expelled can re-enter in a year. If they do so, it means my sister will have to leave the school to avoid them,” she said.

The three offenders stripped the female student, touched her body and took photos of the scene while she was asleep after drinking at an inn during a field trip to a Gyeonggi provincial town in May.

The sister said the victim has been in an unstable mental state and is unable to be interviewed.

She said the attitude of the offenders’ parents made the family pursue stern disciplinary action.

“Those parents claimed their sons did nothing wrong. They came to my house and threatened that if the crime was made public, not only their sons’ lives but also my sister’s life would be ruined.”

According to the victim’s sister, the offenders didn’t apologize to the victim when she told them two days after the incident that she was drunk but remembered what they did.

“They just said they thought she would not remember. They sent her apologetic text messages only after the police investigation began, but the apologies were not sincere,” she said.

She said the victim was deeply disappointed in the offenders who had been her schoolmates for six years. “I hope the incident will alert the school to the issue of women’s rights.”

Korea University officials said Tuesday that the disciplinary committee had decided on but didn’t disclose the punishment, saying there remains a final step in the students’ pleas.

고대생 성추행 의대생 출교 조치 요구

집단 성추행 혐의로 기소된 고려대 의대생 3명에 대한 학교 측의 징계수위를 둘러싸고 '퇴학설'이 불거지고 있다. 마침내 사건 피해자의 언니 A씨가 라디오 방송에서 심경을 밝혔다.

A씨는 17일 오전 CBS 라디오 '김현정의 뉴스쇼'의 전화 인터뷰에서 동생의 근황을 전했다. A씨에 따르면 피해자는 직접 인터뷰가 힘들 정도로 불안한 심리 상태를 보이고 있다.

A씨는 "가해자들은 반드시 출교해야 한다"며 퇴학설에 반발했다. 그는 "고려대는 퇴학 조치 후 빠르면 1학기 만에 학교 재입학이 가능하다"며 "가해자들이 퇴학된다면 동생더러 학교를 나가라는 소리나 다름없다"고 말했다.

처음부터 A씨가 가해자들의 출교 조치를 원한 것은 아니었다. A씨가 가해자들의 강력 처벌을 주장한 것은 가해자 측 부모들의 태도 때문이었다. A씨는 "가해자 측 부모들의 태도 때문에 동생이 울분을 토하며 많이 힘들어했다"고 토로했다.

A씨에 따르면 가해자 측 부모들은 아들의 성추행 혐의를 부인하며 "우리 아들은 잘못이 없다"고 주장하기에 바빴다. 피해자의 집을 찾아가 "이런 게 알려지면 가해자도 끝이지만 피해자도 끝난다"고 협박하기도 했다.

A씨는 사건 직후 사과를 하지 않은 가해자들의 태도도 지적했다. 사건 발생 이틀 뒤 피해자가 가해자들에게 연락해 "술에 취한 상태였지만 너희 행동을 확실히 기억한다"고 말하자 가해자들은 "모를 줄 알았는데 어떻게 알았나"라는 반응만 보였다고.

그는 "며칠 뒤 경찰조사가 시작되자 가해자들이 동생에게 '미안하다'고 문자메시지를 보냈지만 동생은 그들에게서 진심을 느끼지 못했다"고 말했다.

지난 16일 서울중앙지법에서 열린 2차 공판에서도 문제가 있었다고 A씨는 주장했다. A씨는 "가해자 측은 변호인 4명이 들어갔지만 동생은 홀로 법정에 들어서야 했다"며 "재판이 4시간 동안 진행됐는데 혐의를 부인한 가해자 측에선 3시간 동안 질문을 던져 동생이 힘들어 했다"고 밝혔다.

A씨는 "동생과 가해자들은 정말 친한 친구 사이였고 이전에도 그들과 여러 번 MT를 다녔지만 아무런 문제가 없었다"며 "6년 간 함께했던 친구에게 그런 행동을 한 가해자들에게 실망이 크다"고 말했다.

또 "동생은 더 이상 타인을 신뢰하지 않는다"며 "남자들은 절대 믿어서는 안 되는 존재라는 말을 많이 하더라"고 덧붙였다. A씨는 "동생의 일을 계기로 학교가 각성을 하고 여성 인권을 존중해주길 바란다"고 강조했다.

한편 가해자 3명은 지난 5월 21일 오후 11시40분쯤 경기도 가평군의 한 펜션에서 동기인 피해자가 술에 취해 잠든 사이 성추행한 혐의로 검찰에 구속기소됐다.
