2011 is destined to go down in the record books as the year that summer skipped Korea. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Seoul had only 16 dry and sunny days from July 1 to yesterday, and 37 out of 53 days were wet with more than 0.1 millimeters of rain. And as everyone knows, rain is the most ruthless killer of summer holidays. Chang Hye-min, 26, was looking forward to her first summer break from her first job, which she planned for the first week of August. Chang and her friends booked trips to a beach on the west coast, but ended up staying home because of the rain. “When I saw the rain outside, the thought of spending my vacation in the mountains was scary, and the beaches were freezing, so there was nowhere to go,” she said. “I couldn’t change my vacation schedule at work so I ended up staying home.” The same went for Lee Kang-su, 52, a resident of Yongin, Gyeonggi, who planned to do some camping this summer and even bought a lot of new equipment. The torrential rains, followed by Typhoon Muifa, scotched that plan. Lee wanted to use the brand-new equipment, so he decided to camp out in the front yard of his house. But then his yard flooded. “Eighty percent of tourism packages to the south coast or Geoje Island, which are popular every July, were cancelled,” said Lee Jeong-ho, president of Parangsae Tour. “Our phones were ringing off the hook with customers wanting to cancel.” “We had reservations for 1,300 tourists in late July and the first week of August,” said an owner of a whitewater rafting business in Gangwon. “All of them cancelled.” With vacationing in Korea a nonoption, many people flew abroad, resulting in a record 3.9 million international travelers in July. “I was planning to go somewhere in the country, but when the weather got bad I scrambled to find something else,” said Jeon So-yeon, 29. “I ended up going to Bangkok for six days.” By Lee Ji-sang [christine.kim@joongang.co.kr] 한글 관련 기사 [중앙일보] 비 … 비 … 비 … 도둑맞은 여름 휴가 7월 이후 비 안 온 날 16일 불과 국내 휴양지 예약 취소 줄 이어 해외로 발길 … 출국자 사상 최대 #경기도 용인에 사는 이강수(52)씨는 올여름 휴가 때 집 앞에서 캠핑을 했다. 이씨는 가족과 중미산 자연휴양림에서 휴가를 보내려고 올해 초부터 텐트를 사는 등 만반의 준비를 해왔다. 문제는 ‘비’였다. 태풍 ‘무이파’를 시작으로 그칠 줄 모르는 빗줄기가 휴가 길을 가로막았다. 그는 “아쉬운 대로 집 앞 공터에서 텐트를 쳤는데, 해먹은 비가 쏟아져서 써보지도 못했다”고 했다. #“비 때문에 여기저기 난리통인데 어딜 가니.” 신입사원 장혜민(26·여)씨는 휴가 때 친구들과 서해 여행을 가려다 부모님께 꾸중을 들었다. 폭우로 사망 사고가 발생했다는 뉴스가 계속됐기 때문이다. 장씨는 “산은 무섭고, 바다는 춥고, 집 밖 도로는 진흙으로 질척이고 나갈 곳이 없다. 입사 후 첫 휴가인데 집 안에서 무료하게 보냈다”고 말했다. 여름 내내 쏟아진 비 때문에 ‘휴가를 잃어버린’ 직장인들이 아우성이다. 23일 기상청에 따르면 지난달 1일부터 지난 22일까지 53일 중 0.1㎜ 이상 비가 온 날은 37일이었다. 맑은 날은 16일에 불과했다. 같은 기간 중 비 온 날은 2010년 32일, 2009년 30일, 2008년 30일 등과 비교했을 때 최근 5년 중 가장 많다. 특히 7월 말부터 8월 초까지 이른바 ‘여름 성수기’에는 폭우가 쏟아져 많은 직장인이 집을 떠나지 못했다. 덩달아 타격을 입은 곳이 국내 관광을 전문으로 하는 여행사와 레저업체다. 파랑새투어 이정호 대표는 “7월 주력상품인 남해·거제도 등은 예약 취소율이 80%였다”며 “위약금을 물더라도 취소하겠다는 전화가 빗발쳤다”고 말했다. 휴가지에서도 취소 사태가 줄을 이었다. 강원도 인제군 내린천에서 래프팅 업체를 운영하는 정모씨는 “성수기에 1300명이 예약했는데 전부 취소됐다”고 했다. 롯데마트는 7월 중 캠핑용품 매출이 지난해 같은 달보다 12% 감소했다. 반면 지난 7월 해외로 출국한 국제선 여객은 394만 명으로 사상 최고를 기록했다. 회사원 전소연(29·여)씨는 국내 여행을 검토하다 비 소식에 4박6일 태국 방콕으로 행선지를 바꿨다. 전씨는 “간신히 남는 자리를 찾아 예약했다”면서 “경비가 걱정되긴 했지만 우중충한 날씨를 피해 밖으로 나가자는 생각에 해외 여행을 택했다”고 말했다. 모두투어 관계자는 “8월 중순 이후 예약이 예년보다 30% 늘었는데, 9월까지 성수기가 이어진다고 보고 여행 프로그램을 바꾸고 있다”며 “기후 변화가 여행업계의 마케팅에도 영향을 주고 있는 것”이라고 설명했다. |
