What are Daum and Google up to?

U.S. search giant Google has reportedly been talking with both the founder and the chief executive officer of Korea’s No. 2 Web portal, Daum, recently.

And market analysts are wondering what’s up, given all the rapid changes, collaborations and mergers that have been making headlines in the IT industry lately.

According to Daum officials, Daniel Alegre, Google’s president for Japan and Asia-Pacific, is known to have visited the Daum headquarters in Hannam-dong, central Seoul, on Aug. 19 and held a closed-door meeting with Choi Se-hoon, Daum’s chief executive officer, for an hour.

The visit was carried out in a clandestine way - apparently kept secret even from Google Korea, sources said. Alegre reportedly had only one foreign Google employee with him.

Alegre told the JoongAng Ilbo after the meeting that he and Choi shared their views on general issues in the Internet industry, including Korea’s search advertising market.

He added that Google considers any Korean Web portal company like Daum a partner rather than a rival, and that in that sense, he is willing to sit down with anyone to talk business synergies.

But a key source in the local IT sector confirmed to the JoongAng Ilbo that “Google also contacted Lee Jae-woong [the founder and the largest shareholder of Daum] and made a certain business proposal,” sparking speculation that Google’s interested in more than just “vision-sharing.”

Daum officials said the two leaders “just conversed about pending matters in the industry,” but added “[Opportunity] is always open, no?” to reporter’s repeated questions on possible business deals.

Most analysts said that if the two were to work together, it would be on a mobile advertising platform. Last year Google acquired AdMob, a mobile ad platform company, and last year Daum launched AD@m, a mobile ad platform, the first Korean Web portal to do so.

Because of the similarities between the two businesses, analysts said the two companies could join forces to grab an early lead in the market against NHN, Korea’s No.1 Web portal.

In an interview will the Wall Street Journal, Alegre said: “In markets that are very developed, like South Korea or Japan, because 3G networks are so pervasive and commute times are very long, the migrations to mobile are much faster than anywhere else in the world.”

He said, “This means that we really need to be thinking of ourselves as a mobile-first company .?.?. How do people leverage maps and location-based services on mobile phones and how should ads be shown to consumers on mobile phones?”

Some media even raised the possibility of Google buying Daum, given that Google, despite being a giant in the global arena, has long struggled to build its small presence in the Korean market. According to industry figures, Daum’s market share was 21 percent at the end of May while Google’s was just 2 percent.

Rumors that Daum may be an acquisition target by either foreign firms or Korean conglomerates have been persistent, as the founders’ families hold about 17 percent of the shares and institutional and minority investors hold the rest, which means a buyer can just acquire a 17 percent share and control the company.

Daum officials argue they are not in the loop.

“It was a meeting between top management executives, so we aren’t sure exactly what was discussed,” said Lee Yong-wook, a Daum PR manager.

Whatever the motives, the Google-Daum encounter is also interesting because both companies have been under police investigation since May about allegations that they collect users’ location information wrongly.
