The rise in consumer prices surpassed the 5 percent level last month, remaining above the central bank’s annual target of 4 percent for the eighth consecutive month.

The price growth, which comes despite the government’s anti-inflation measures, was mainly led by surging vegetable and gold prices.

According to Statistics Korea yesterday, the country’s consumer price index rose 5.3 percent in August compared to the same month last year, which is the largest gain since August 2008, when prices rose 5.6 percent. This was higher than the previous month’s 4.7 percent growth.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile oil and agricultural prices, rose 4 percent on-year in August, which is the largest gain in 28 months. The figure was up from the previous month’s 3.8 percent.

“The higher-than-expected price hike in August was mainly due to price surges in agricultural products and gold,” said Yoon Jong-won, director general of the Ministry of Strategy and Finance’s economic policy department. Heavy rainfall disrupted the supply of goods from devastated farms, driving up prices of vegetables and fruits.

According to Statistics Korea, from June 1 to Aug. 20, the country had 1,030 millimeters (40.5 inches) of rain, which was 165 percent above the normal 619 millimeters.

Last month’s consumer prices were also affected by the hike in gold prices as investors turned to safe assets as financial markets were affected by global economic uncertainties. The average price of gold jumped from $1,573 per ounce in July to $1,751 in August.

According to the agency’s report, Korea’s fresh food price index jumped 13.8 percent last month from the previous year. Agricultural, livestock and fishery products saw their costs rise 13.3 percent. Prices for manufactured products also jumped 7.1 percent, with oil costs spiking 15.2 percent from a year earlier.

“We expect consumer price rises to go down to around 4 percent after the Chuseok [Korea’s harvest festival] holiday,” Yoon said. Prices of vegetables and fruits tend to go up during national holidays like Chuseok, which falls on Sept. 12 this year, due to high demand.

Since early this year, the government has been focused on taming inflation and has been closely monitoring prices of goods including Napa cabbages, radishes, apples and pears.

Korea’s inflation has remained higher than the government’s target of 4 percent every month this year. In late June, the government revised its annual inflation target for this year from 3 percent to 4 percent.

“Despite our efforts, prices keep surging,” Vice Finance Minister Yim Jong-ryong told reporters yesterday. “This, of course, places a huge burden on ordinary households.”

Analysts have speculated that the government could lower the country’s economic growth target for this year while raising its inflation target, but the vice minister denied it.

“The government will maintain its current macroeconomic policy related to inflation and growth, while responding to changing economic conditions flexibly and swiftly,” Yim said.

Policy makers are expected to meet next week to decide whether or not to raise the country’s key interest rate. Last month, the Bank of Korea left its key interest rate unchanged at 3.25 percent for the second consecutive month despite worries about inflation as there are mounting economic uncertainties home and abroad. According to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy yesterday, last month’s trade surplus also fell to $821 million as record-high imports overshadowed export gains.
