In responding to reports of his tax evasion charges and subsequent fine, Kang, an ex-ssireum, or Korean wrestling, athlete said in a press release yesterday that it is true he had been under investigation by the government and that the NTS had charged him a fine amounting to hundreds of millions of won.
“I’ve sincerely complied with the tax agency’s investigation over the past several months,” Kang said in the release. “Although my lawyers and accountants contested some of the charges against me over the course of the investigation, in the end the NTS concluded that I paid less tax than I was supposed to. I will pay the fine.”
The 41-year-old MC who speaks in a trademark heavy Gyeongsang dialect began his career in the entertainment business as a comedian. He has been featured on several popular TV shows such as “The Knee-drop Guru” on MBC and “1 Night, 2 Days” on KBS.

강호동·김아중 수억대 세금 추징
소득 축소 … 소속사 “충실히 납부”
개그맨 강호동(42)씨가 국세청으로부터 수억원대의 세금을 추징당했다.
강씨의 소속사는 5일 보도자료를 내고 “최근 국세청으로부터 세무조사를 받아 수억원대의 추징금을 부과받았다”며 “추징된 세금을 충실히 납부할 것”이라고 밝혔다.
국세청은 최근 몇 년간 강씨의 종합소득세 신고 내역을 분석한 뒤 소득이 축소 신고됐다는 혐의를 잡고 최근 5개월간 세무조사를 벌였다. 강씨에 대한 조사는 서울청 조사2국이 담당했다. 세금추징 시기는 지난달 말인 것으로 알려졌다.
조사에서 국세청은 강씨가 의상 구입비와 교통비 등 각종 비용을 과다 계상해 소득을 축소한 사실을 확인했다. 강씨는 KBS의 ‘1박2일’과 MBC의 ‘무릎팍도사’, SBS의 ‘강심장’, ‘스타킹’ 등에서 받는 회당 출연료가 1000만원에 이른다.
탤런트 김아중(29)도 국세청으로부터 과거 수년간의 소득세 내역에 대해 세무조사를 받아 수억원의 추징금 통보를 받은 것으로 알려졌다.
한편 국세청은 “납세자 개인의 세무조사에 대한 정보를 공개할 수 없다”며 “연예인 등 특정 직업에 초점을 맞춰 세무조사를 진행하는 것은 현재 없다”고 말했다. 연예인에 대한 국세청의 세무조사는 신고 성실도 등을 평가해 정기 또는 수시(무작위)로 진행되는데 강호동처럼 고소득 연예인은 변호사·의사 등과 함께 신고관리대상에 포함돼 있다.
