YEONGAM, South Jeolla - Already-confirmed world champion Sebastian Vettel won the 2011 Formula One Korean Grand Prix yesterday, clinching his 10th title of the year and helping his Red Bull team defend the constructors’ championship.

At the 5.615-kilometer-long (3.48- mile-long) Korea International Circuit in Yeongam, South Jeolla, yesterday, the 24-year-old German finished the 55-lap race first at 1 hour, 38 minutes, 1.994 seconds, which was more than 12 seconds ahead of McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton, the 26-year-old Briton who also finished runner-up in last year’s Korean Grand Prix, took the pole position for the first time since the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix after winning Saturday’s qualification race, but couldn’t keep his advantage as Vettel snatched the lead from the opening lap.

“It was so much fun to drive,” Vettel said at the press conference. “After last weekend with the drivers’ championship and this week the constructors’ - it’s fantastic.”

With the win, Vettel, who confirmed his second straight world championship at last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, can still tie Michael Schumacher’s record of 13 wins in a season.

Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber finished third to ensure that Red Bull clinched back-to-back constructors’ championships. With three races remaining, there are a maximum of 129 points to be won, but Red Bull now has a 140-point lead over McLaren, which has 418.

“A second title is testimony to the dedication and commitment of the whole team,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

McLaren’s Jenson Button, who won the Japanese Grand Prix, took fourth, followed by Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso, the defending Korean Grand Prix winner, and Felipe Massa.

This year’s Korean Grand Prix wrapped up successfully compared to the poorly prepared inaugural event last year. Visitors said that there were lots of improvements compared to last year.

Some 84,174 spectators showed up to watch the final event, with a three-day total of 160,236 fans, according to the organizing committee.

세바스티안 페텔은 2006년 터키그랑프리(GP)의 연습 주행에 테스트 드라이버로 참가하면서 F1 그랑프리 공식 세션에 참가한 최연소 드라이버로 기록을 남겼다. 현재 F1 무대를 누비고 있는 차세대 드라이버 중에서도 가장 빛나는 별이다.

F1 데뷔전이었던 2007년 미국GP에서 F1 최연소 포인트 획득 기록을 세운 페텔은 같은 해 일본GP에서 F1 레이스 중 선두에 선 최연소 드라이버가 되었고 2008년 이태리GP에서는 F1 최연소 폴포지션과 최연소 우승 기록도 갱신했다.

페텔은 같은 시기에 경쟁했던 라이벌들과 달리 적극적인 팀의 지원을 받지 못했다. 해밀턴이 항상 최고의 환경에서 실력을 증명해 왔지만 베텔은 자신이 능동적으로 대처하지 않으면 우승할 수 없는 처지였다. 그런 환경이 중견 팀으로 평가를 받던 토로로소와 2008년의 레드불에 몸을 담고 있으면서 기적적인 승리를 장식하거나 주위를 놀라게 하는 단초를 제공한 것으로 풀이되고 있다.

페텔은 마카오 F3 등을 통해 머신의 능력을 최대로 끌어내는 주행은 드라이버로서의 실력을 충분히 증명했다. 2006년 BMW자우버 팀의 서드 드라이버로 발탁되면서 전설이 시작된다.

2007년 페텔은 미국 GP에서 선명하고 강렬한 인상을 심어주며 F1 데뷔전을 화려하게 맞았다. 앞선 캐나다 GP에서 추돌사고를 내 부상당한 로버트 쿠비차 대신 출전해 8위를 차지, F1 사상 최연소(19세 349일) 득점 기록을 세웠다.

페텔이 시즌 전 경기를 참전할 수 있게 된 것은 2008년. 개막전부터 4전 연속 리타이어를 경험했지만 곧 득점권에 들기 시작하면서 안정을 찾았다. 비가 내리는 가운데 펼쳐진 제14전 이탈리아 GP에서 베텔은 마침내 F1 역대 최연소 폴 투 피니시(21세 73일)를 거두면서 그의 시대가 개막됐음을 알렸다.

2009년 레드불 레이싱으로 팀을 옮긴 페텔은 중국GP를 시작으로 4승을 올리며 시즌 종합 포인트 순위 2위에 올랐고, 2010년에는 열 차례의 폴포지션을 획득하고 다섯 번의 그랑프리에서 우승을 차지하면서 F1 최연소 챔피언의 기록을 갱신하는 데 성공했다.
