Two rallies held in Seoul over the weekend inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement fizzled due to low attendance and a heavy downpour.

Organizers said they expected more than 5,000 protesters to attend the rallies on Saturday but rain kept attendance to around 800 - 200 in Yeouido, western Seoul, and 600 in front of Deoksu Palace in central Seoul.

The first rally of the day, organized by three consumer groups, got underway at 2 p.m. in front of the Financial Services Commission in Yeouido, the nation’s financial hub.

Amidst the thunderclaps, protesters chanted, “Tax the rich, jobs for workers,” to demand the government address economic inequality. The rally also criticized corporate greed.

“We’ve been keeping a close eye on Occupy Wall Street, and we thought we should join the global rally,” said Baek Jong of rally organizer Spec Watch Korea. “The lives of the rich, the one percent, are getting easier while the other 99 percent of the world’s population is drowning in debt.”

At 6 p.m., about 600 people from 42 civic groups including the Group for Joint Action for the 99 Percent, a coalition of civic groups and political parties, gathered in front of Deoksu Palace for the Occupy Seoul rally.

Protesters focused their criticism on the Korea-U.S. FTA, saying it will make the rich richer while cutting jobs for the poor. “I can’t understand why President Lee is so working hard on the FTA,” a rally participant said. “He is working for the rich, not for us.”

Organizers said they will hold another Occupy Seoul rally on Saturday.
