Celebrities actively encouraging voting

Popular singer Lee Hyo-ri and other entertainers are eager to get people to cast their vote in the mayoral by-election today.

In Korea, most TV celebrities take a neutral stance in elections and refrain from expressing their political stance. There are however, some entertainers like actor Park Jung-hoon who have openly emphasized the importance of people exercising their right to vote.

“One of my films, luckily enough, attracted over 10 million moviegoers. They didn’t probably expect to be part of 10 million but simply bought one ticket,” he said Monday on his Twitter account, referring to his successful film “Haeundae.” “It will be the same in the election, and your one vote can be part of 10 million votes for a candidate.”

On the same day, singer Lee Hyo-ri echoed the sentiment motivating young people to vote in the election by retweeting the message by popular novelist Lee Oi-soo.

The novelist said, “Young people! Haven’t you ever had complaints about the world? If you have, please vote in the election! We can’t ignore corruption, illegality, deception and hypocrisy anymore. By voting, become a candlelight that can expel the darkness.”

After re-tweeting the comment, the singer said, “I wish I could write a good message like that. I just want you all to vote.”

Popular television MC Kim Je-dong said: “Not giving up our right to vote is the only way to protect our rights. It is the day we proudly declare the country is ours.”

Many celebrities have uploaded and shared photos taken in front of polling stations across the city online in previous elections.

As they could be taken as the breach of the Election Law, entertainers this time are expected to refrain from posting these so-called “certification shots.” The election monitoring commission is moving to crack down on illegal campaigning via social network services.
