Japanese excluded from 23 language services By Kim Tae-gyu There is an easy way to evaluate any firm’s commitment to the global market ¡ª look up their Web sites. It would be safe to say that the more language services it provides, the more it is willing to tap into offshore markets. If that is the case, it can be said that Hyundai Motor, Korea’s biggest automaker, is genuinely ready to take on its rivals on the global scene since the company now promotes its corporate social responsibility (CSR) slogan in 23 tongues. The Seoul-based entity said Wednesday that the slogan of ``Moving the World Together’’ covers around half of the world’s 7 billion population through the 23 languages. The list comprises almost all major languages such as English, Chinese and Spanish on top of Korean. Of note is that Japanese is excluded for some reason. ``Our efforts of providing as many language services as possible demonstrate our commitment to diversity and inclusion, which has been a success factor for us,’’ a Hyundai Motor official said. ``We will keep our words by practicing various CSR programs across the world to become a responsible corporate citizen in each place.’’ Also included in the 23 languages are French, German, Greek, Italian, Russian, Polish, Turkish, Arabic, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek, Bulgarian, Czech, Croatian, Portuguese, Serbian, Ukrainian, Tamil and Persian. However, Japanese was not in the list, which is quite strange since domestic corporations tend to put the language as one of their four major selections along with English, Chinese and Korean. Hyundai Motor said that the decision is about its business prospects. ``Our sales in Japan are not so big as local brands are favored by customers there. And we have no specific ideas to conduct CSR activities in Japan. That is why we forwent Japanese,’’ the official said. ``In contrast, we put some unconventional languages as we plan to conduct CSR programs briskly for people speaking them although our sales are not so strong there in the hopes of expanding our presence.’’
