The sudden cold spell that gripped the nation over the weekend, with the mercury falling below zero in most parts of the peninsula Sunday, will continue until Tuesday according to the state weather agency.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) reported a morning low of minus 2.2 degrees centigrade in Seoul, while the midday high stood at 5 degrees, falling by more than 10 degrees from Saturday.

Monday’s morning low could drop further to minus 3 degrees in Seoul with a daily high of 8 degrees, the agency said.

Although this was the first time for the temperature to fall below zero, it was 25 days later than in an average year, the KMA said.

In Daegwallyeong, a mountain pass in the country’s northeastern region just kilometers south of the inter-Korean border, the temperature plunged to minus 4.3 degrees.

The KMA said the icy weather will remain until tomorrow due to an extremely high pressure system from Siberia.

“It will be cold for another two days with temperatures below average although it will be sunny in most parts of the country,” a KMA spokesman said.

“After the high pressure from Siberia recedes, the temperature may rise again.”

The spokesman, however, said a cold spell could again grip the country in a few days as rain is forecast across the nation on Tuesday night or Wednesday.

낮기온 10도 이상 ‘뚝’ 서울 첫 얼음

일요인인 20일 서울과 경기도 일부 지역 아침 최저기온이 영하권으로 떨어지는 등 전국이 초겨울 날씨를 보이고 있다. 추위는 22일께 풀릴 전망이다.

기상청은 20일 "중국 중부지방에 있는 차가운 대륙고기압의 영향을 받아 서울·경기도와 그 밖의 중부 내륙 및 남부 내륙 지방의 아침 기온이 전날보다 4~7도 떨어진 영하를 기록했다"며 "바람이 강해 체감온도는 더욱 낮겠다"고 밝혔다.

이날 아침 최저기온은 서울 영하 2.2도, 인천 영하 0.6도, 수원 영하 0.8도, 춘천 영하 1.5도, 충주 영하 0.2도를 보였다. 바람의 영향으로 체감 온도는 2~5도 더 낮았다.

서울과 인천에서는 올해 들어 첫 얼음이 관측됐다. 첫 얼음 시기는 서울의 경우 평년보다는 21일, 지난해보다는 25일이 각각 늦었다고 기상청은 설명했다.

전국 대부분 지방의 낮기온도 전날 낮보다 10도 이상 큰 폭으로 떨어지겠다면서 건강 관리와 시설물 관리, 산불 등 화재예방에 각별히 유의해줄 것도 당부했다.

밤부터는 바람이 점차 약해지겠으나 야간 복사냉각으로 기온이 더욱 떨어져 21일 아침에는 남해안을 제외한 전국 대부분 지방이 영하의 기온을 보이겠다.

기상청 관계자는 "이번 추위는 모레쯤 평년 기온을 되찾으면서 점차 풀릴 것으로 전망한다. 체감온도가 더 낮은 만큼 건강관리에 유의해야 한다"고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
