The prosecution is investigating a female prosecutor over allegations that she received a Chanel bag from a law firm in exchange for peddling her influence. She is also suspected of having used the firm’s car.

Prosecutors at Busan District Prosecutors’ Office said Monday that they obtained cell phone text message records exchanged between the 36-year-old prosecutor, whose name was not disclosed, and a 49-year-old lawyer of the law firm in Busan about the payment for the bag and influence exercising in return.

Investigators recently raided the office of the lawyer, a former judge.

The prosecutor offered to resign last week after allegations about “sponsorship” by the law firm surfaced — she drove a Mercedes leased under the law firm’s name and spent millions of won monthly with the firm’s corporate credit card.

She is suspected of having exercised her influence on a case in which the lawyer filed a complaint against two of his former business partners. On a cell phone, the female prosecutor said through text messages in October, “I asked for a favor from the prosecutor in charge of the case.”

In another message in November, she also said she had asked another prosecutor to deal with the case in favor of the lawyer.

She then urged the lawyer to send her 5.4 million won ($4,600) so that she could buy a Chanel bag, including her bank account number. On Dec. 5, the bag was purchased from a department store in southern Seoul and paid for with the lawyer’s corporate credit card.

The prosecution suspects she demanded the bag in exchange for helping in the lawyer’s suit.

It is said the two have known each other since 2007 when she worked as a lawyer in Busan before becoming a prosecutor.

“It seems that the two have been close for a long time, often exchanging gifts. They may claim the Mercedes and the Chanel bag were private presents. But she may face influence peddling charges if she had asked for favors from other prosecutors on behalf of the lawyer and received money in return. We’ll question both of them soon,” a prosecutor said.

About the Mercedes, the lawyer claimed he had temporarily asked her to take care of the care and took it back in June.

벤츠도 모자라 샤넬백마저 요구한 女검사 수사

부장판사 출신의 변호사로부터 청탁 대가로 고급승용차 벤츠를 `빌려 탔던` 여검사가 500만원이 넘는 샤넬 핸드백도 받았다는 의혹이 제기되고 있다.

검찰은 이 같은 정황을 포착, 이달에 해당 변호사의 사무실을 압수수색한 것으로 전해졌다.

28일 경향신문은 부산지방검찰청이 지난해 9월부터 3개월에 걸쳐 A검사와 B변호사가 주고 받은 휴대전화 문자 내역을 최근 입수했다고 보도했다.

보도에 따르면 지난해 10월 8일 A검사는 B변호사에게 "(사건 담당 검사에게) 뜻대로 전달했다, (해당 검사가 구속)영장청구도 고려해 보겠다고 한다" 등의 문자를 보낸 것으로 나타났다. B변호사가 A검사에게 청탁했다는 것을 암시하는 대목이다.

A 검사는 이 같은 문자를 보낸 후 같은 달 21일 "나쁜 인간 둘 다 기각했다"며 "정의감이라곤 없는 판사들 만만한 사람만 구속하나"고 B 변호사에게 보내기도 했다.

문제의 샤넬 가방은 그 다음달인 11월 30일 나온다. 이 날 A 검사는 "백값 보내달라"며 자신의 은행계좌와 가방 값 540만원을 문자로 요구한다. 그런데도 답장이 없었는지 작년 12월 6일 "진짜 오늘 샤넬 가방값 보내달라"며 재촉한 것으로 전해졌다. 이에 앞서 이달 5일 서울 강남의 한 백화점에서는 B변호사가 대표로 있는 법무법인의 법인카드로 539만원이 결제됐다.

이와 관련, 검찰은 A검사가 청탁을 전해주고 사건 수사 상황을 흘린 대가로 샤넬 가방을 요구한 게 아닌지 보고 있다. 이에 따라 A검사에게 알선수뢰죄를 적용하는 것을 검토 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

A검사는 B변호사의 법무법인 명의인 벤츠 승용차를 수년간 타고 다니고 법인카드도 받아 수천만원씩 긁은 것으로 최근 검찰 수사 결과 나타났다. B변호사는 검찰 조사에서 "벤츠 승용차를 잠깐 맡긴 것인데 돌려받지 못했다"고 진술한 것으로 전해졌으며 A검사는 수사가 본격적으로 진행되자 이달 중순 사표를 냈다.

지난 2002년 법관을 그만두고 부산에 변호사 사무실을 연 B변호사는 부산지검에 근무하던 A검사와 지난 2008년 알게 됐다고 한다. 두 사람의 관계는 지난 7월 부산지검에 진정사건이 접수되면서 세상에 알려졌다.
