Local credit card companies have come under heavy pressure to lower their transaction fees in recent weeks, first from small business owners and then from captains of industry like Hyundai Motor.

After the auto behemoth persuaded six credit card firms to cut their fees, it decided to teach KB Kookmin, the lone holdout, a lesson by refusing to accept its cards from Nov. 4.

After a sudden burst of media coverage, the industry’s No. 4 card company finally caved in on Wednesday and accepted the carmaker’s terms.

But although credit card companies are increasingly at bay, their worst nightmare may not be big conglomerates or self-employed business owners, but the average “cherry picker.”

This refers to people who use their credit cards sparingly, but who make sure they get the most bang for their buck by making the most of points systems and generally spending wisely.

This trend is likely to strengthen as there are now a number of powerful tools to help savvy credit card users navigate the many perks of Korea’s card sector in the form of apps that keep track of their plastic spending.

In the first half of 2011, the average economically active Korean held 4.9 credit cards, according to data provided by the Credit Financial Association. The cards offer a wide range of value-added services, such as accumulating points and granting access to discounts at different locations, but many people find it hard to keep track of these in order to get the best value out of their credit card payments.

This has created demand for systems that clearly show how to maximize card usage to best exploit deals by switching among various cards and stores, said Cho Gyu-beom. The 37-year-old freelance software developer drew on a 10 years’ experience to develop the aptly named Cherry Picker app on Android.

“I used to manage all of my credit card payments across multiple cards on Excel documents,” said Cho. “It entailed checking every Web site of every single credit card company every few days to print out and organize my payment records.”

But as he grew tired of the chore late last year, a friend suggested that he develop a “household account” program. Within two weeks, Cho had created the Cherry Picker app, which was released in January.

The response has been explosive, with 320,000 people having downloaded the free app as of last month.

Users’ reviews of the Korean-language app, which holds a four-and-a-half star rating on the Android market, are generally glowing. One self-confessed rookie cherry picker wrote about how they had cut their credit card spending in half since using the app, while an older user sang praises through the following post: “I’m finally free from all that Excel work.”

Cho said he receives about 10 questions or requests for improvement every day.

The app uses a simple text-message service to keep track of users’ card spending. Every time a card is swiped, a message is sent directly to the users’ phone showing how much money has been spent within the target required to maximize the benefits.

Cho is a living example of how useful the app can be as he switches between 10 credit cards to squeeze the maximum advantages out of them in terms of gleaning discounts from large discount stores, gas stations, mobile phone bills and lecture fees at private academies.

He said he uses the credit card that gives a discount on apartment management fees first, as this offers the biggest perks for the smallest amount spent. After he has spent 300,000 won ($266) on this card - the smallest amount required to be eligible for the discount - he moves on to the next one.Cho claims that this system enables him to recoup around 4 percent of the 1.7 million won he spends on average each month using his credit cards.

“Just using one card for all of your spending is only good for the credit card company,” he said. “Choosing credit cards with good discounts is the other half of the battle.”

Other free apps that serve the same function include Credit Card Memo (Light) in the iPhone App Store and Card Planner, available for Android phones.

Cho said he is not planning to release an iPhone version of the Cherry Picker app due to problems with automatically reading text messages and the comparatively high registration fee for new developers.
