A former female prosecutor embroiled in a corruption scandal was arrested on Monday to be questioned over allegations that she received a luxury sedan and a designer handbag in return for peddling her influence, prosecutors dealing with the case said.

The Busan prosecutors took the 36-year-old woman surnamed Lee into custody on Monday morning and were interrogating her, they said.
"An arrest warrant was issued on grounds that there were concerns she may disobey a summons (if not for the arrest) ... and the investigation should be conducted speedily," a prosecution official said.
The former prosecutor is suspected of pressing a fellow prosecutor late last year to advance a criminal case in favor of a private-practice lawyer surnamed Choi. In return, she purportedly received a Chanel handbag worth 5.4 million won (US$4,700) and a Mercedes-Benz sedan.
The prosecutor resigned from office in a city near Seoul last month after the scandal emerged.
As part of efforts to assuage rising public anger over public officials' corruption, the prosecution launched an independent team of prosecutors and inspectors to look into the scandal.
During the ongoing interrogation, prosecutors were seeking to find a link between the kickbacks she received and a potential favor given to the 49-year-old lawyer, who was reportedly having a secret love affair with the arrested prosecutor.
Choi had denied in a recent interrogation that the gifts were given to the suspect in exchange for her influence as an incumbent prosecutor, prosecutors said.

'벤츠 女검사' 체포..본격 조사 들어가
'벤츠 여검사'로 불리는 이모(36•여) 전 검사가 5일 오전 체포돼 현재 부산지검으로 압송중이다.
이창재 특임검사팀은 오전 7시쯤 이 전 검사를 서울 자택에서 피의자 신분으로 체포해 부산지검으로 압송, 본격 조사에 들어갔다고 밝혔다.
검찰 관계자는 "이 전 검사가 소환에 불응할 우려가 있고, 여성인 이 전 검사가 소환통보를 받을 경우 정서적으로 불안한 부분이 있는데다 조사의 신속성을 위해 체포영장을 발부받아 체포했다"고 말했다.
검찰은 이 전 검사를 상대로 부장판사 출신 최모(49) 변호사로부터 벤츠 승용차 와 500만원대 샤넬 핸드백 등 금품을 수수했는지와 이것이 사건청탁과 관련된 것인 지 집중 추궁한 뒤 48시간 안에 구속영장 청구 여부를 판단할 계획이다.
검찰은 또 이 전 검사가 최 변호사 사건을 창원지검 동료검사에게 전화로 청탁 한 이유를 확인할 예정이다.
이와 함께 이 전 검사가 최 변호사를 통해 검사장급 인사에게 자신의 인사를 청 탁했다는 의혹도 수사대상이다.
검찰은 이에 앞서 지난 4일까지 최 변호사를 나흘째 불러 강도 높은 조사를 벌 였으나 최 변호사는 금품제공이 사건청탁의 대가와는 무관하다는 주장을 반복한 것 으로 전해졌다.
이에 따라 검찰은 필요할 경우 이 전 검사와 최 변호사의 대질신문도 벌인다는 방침이다.
특임검사팀은 또 최근 이 사건 진정인인 이모(39•여)씨를 불러 진정 경위를 파 악하고, 관련자료를 제출받아 정밀 분석중인 것으로 알려졌다.
관련 자료에는 최 변호사가 검사장급 인사 등에게 청탁해 진정인의 사건을 해결 하겠다고 쓴 각서와 부산지법 모 부장판사에게 법인카드 사용액수만큼 현금을 제공 했다고 말한 동영상도 포함된 것으로 전해졌다.
특임검사팀은 최 변호사와 진정인 이씨의 진술이 엇갈려 이들 두 사람의 대질신 문도 검토중이다.
