He asked for her hand in marriage, but she refused him. A few weeks later, a group of men stormed into her house in the city of Kunduz in Afghanistan and attacked her family of five.

Mumtaz, 18, is the oldest daughter in her family and the one who rejected a suitor due to his reputation of being a troublemaker. Her family supported her decision and Mumtaz became engaged to a relative.

According to her mother, the six or seven men beat the father and poured acid on the whole family, which consists of Mumtaz’s parents and two sisters.

The BBC reports that the man Mumtaz refused to marry is part of a militia called the Arbakis, which has been accused of many crimes, such as rape.

The head of the Kunduz hospital, Abdul Shokor Rahimi, says the family is being treated for injuries and that Mumtaz and her father are in critical condition.

Kunduz senior police detective, Ghulam Mohammad Farhad, has vowed to find those responsible, calling them immoral.

The furious courter is not the only one who has used acid on victims. Areas in Afghanistan that are ruled by the Taliban have been sites where such acid attacks have occurred, such as when a group of school girls had acid thrown on them by Talibam members who were against women being educated.

An Afghan journalist Abdul Razaq Mamon now has permanent burns on his face after attackers threw acid on him in January, most likely due to his political beliefs.

The international combat mission in Afghanistan is set to end by 2014, yet many are worried about the future for Afghan women.

“내 딸 못 줘!” 결혼 반대 가족에 염산 테러


아프가니스탄의 한 일가족이 집에서 정체를 알 수 없는 무장 괴한들의 공격을 받았다. 가족들의 눈에 무책임하게 보인 한 남성에게 딸을 시집보내기를 거부했다가 이런 일을 당한 것. 괴한들은 아버지를 때리고 부모와 세 자녀에게 염산을 뿌렸다고 관련 당국이 11월 30일(현지 시간) 밝혔다.

장녀인 뭄타즈(18)는 이 지역에 사는 한 남성의 구애를 받아왔다. 하지만 가족들이 보기에 이 남성은 말썽꾼에 깡패였고, 뭄타즈의 부모는 딸이 그를 거절하고 친척이랑 약혼할 수 있도록 지지해줬다.
몇 주 뒤 어느 날 한밤중에 북 쿤두즈 시의 불락 아왈 지역에 있는 뭄타즈 가족의 집에 무장 괴한 6~7명이 쳐들어왔다.

일가족 5명 모두 병원에서 치료를 받고 있다고 쿤두즈 지역 병원 병원장 압둘 쇼코 라히미가 말했다.

“이 환자들은 정체불명의 남성들이 한밤중에 집에 쳐들어왔다고 말했다. 그들은 가족을 구타하고 그중 한 사람이 가족에게 염산을 뿌렸다.”

굴람 모하메드 파하드 쿤두즈 시 선임 형사는 ‘비도덕적이고 무책임한’ 괴한들을 잡아내겠다고 약속했다.

아프가니스탄에서 염산은 종종 무기로 사용된다. 하지만 항상 여성들이 염산 테러의 대상은 아니다. 보수적이고 탈레반의 영향을 받은 남부와 동부 지역에서는 학교에 다니는 여학생들이 염산 테러를 받아왔다.

아프가니스탄의 원로 저널리스트이자 방송 진행자, 해설자, 작가인 압둘 라자크 마몬은 1월 카불에서 염산 테러를 당해 손과 얼굴에 화상을 입었다. 당국은 정치적인 이유로 공격을 받은 걸로 보인다고 밝혔다.

외국군 병력이 2014년 말까지 철수하기로 예정되어진 상황에서, 아프간 안팎의 일부 운동가들은 서방국가들이 남기고 가는 비교적 안정적인 상황을 지키려고 다투는 와중에 여성의 권리가 희생될지도 모른다는 점을 우려하고 있다.
