Korea welcomed U.S. President Barack Obama’s nomination of Korean-born Jim Yong Kim, president of Dartmouth College, to lead the World Bank.
“The World Bank plays a crucial role in eradicating world poverty and fostering development, so Kim is fit for the job given his previous experience in related fields,” said Blue House spokesman Park Jeong-ha. “Korea highly appreciates President Obama’s decision to choose Kim and will closely cooperate with the World Bank in the coming days.”
As a pioneer in the treatment of HIV, AIDS and tuberculosis, Kim has the breadth of experience on development issues needed to carry out the financial institution’s antipoverty mission, Obama said.
Kim, who moved from Korea to the U.S. at the age of five, has an M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University.
Before going to Dartmouth in 2009, he was director of the World Health Organization’s HIV/AIDS department and a professor at Harvard concentrating on new strategies to improve health in developing nations.
Bahk Jae-wan, Minister of Strategy and Finance, also welcomed Kim’s nomination.
“We expect President Kim to build a bridge between developing and developed countries in a fast-changing global economy,” said Park in a release.
The World Bank will select its new leader in a joint meeting with the International Monetary Fund in April, and the chosen president will start work in July. Traditionally, the U.S. nominee gets the job. The new president will replace Robert Zoellick.
The two other candidates are Colombian national Jose Antonio, a professor at Columbia University, and Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Obama’s unexpected pick of the Korean-American was seen as aimed at countering a claim by African and Latin American countries that the U.S. dominates the 187-nation World Bank.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton said, “Jim Kim is an inspired and outstanding choice to lead the World Bank based on his years of commitment and leadership to development and particularly health care and AIDS treatment across the world.”
Clinton added, “He will be the most experienced development expert to ever take the helm of the World Bank and I compliment President Obama for putting that type of proven commitment to global development at the top of his criteria for choosing the World Bank’s next leader.”

미국 아이비리그 중의 하나인 다트머스대는 최초로 한국인 김용(49·미국명 Jim Young Kim) 하버드 의대 국제보건·사회의학과장을 새 총장으로 선출했다고 2일(현지시간) 밝혔다.
다트머스대는 브라운, 컬럼비아, 코넬, 하버드, 펜실베이니아, 프린스턴, 예일 등과 함께 미국 동부 8개 명문 사립대를 뜻하는 아이비리그 중의 하나다.
다트머스대는 14명으로 구성된 총장선임위원회를 작년 6월에 구성, 400여명의 후보자를 놓고 총장 선임 작업을 진행온 것으로 전해졌다.
2일(현지시간) 뉴햄프셔주 다트머스대에서 열린 신임 총장 소개 행사에서 김 신임 총장의 선임을 발표한 다트머스대 에드 핼드먼 재단 이사장은 "김 신임 총장은 다트머스대의 사명 중 핵심인 배움과 혁신, 봉사와 관련해 가장 이상적인 인물"이라고 말했다.
김 신임 총장은 1959년 12월 서울에서 출생, 5살 때 부모와 함께 미국 아이오와주 머스커틴으로 이민했다. 브라운대학을 거쳐 하버드대학에서 의학과 인류학 박사학위를 받았으며 하버드 의대 교수로 재직해왔다.
김 신임 총장은 중남미 등의 빈민지역에서 결핵 퇴치를 위한 의료구호활동을 벌여왔으며, 2004년에는 세계보건기구(WHO) 에이즈국장을 맡아 에이즈 치료를 위한 활발한 활동을 벌여온 것으로 알려졌다.
특히 이러한 공로를 인정받아 2006년에는 미국 타임 지가 뽑은 '세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 100인'에 선정되기도 했다. 2005년에는 US 뉴스 앤 월드 리포트가 선정한 '미국의 최고 지도자 25명'에 드는 영광도 얻었다.
김 신임 총장은 오는 7월 1일 제임스 라이트 현 총장으로부터 자리를 이어 받아 한국인 최초이자, 아시아인 최초로 다트머스대를 이끌게 된다.
