Seoul‘s Gangnam Station on Line 2 is the most heavily used subway station in the capital city, data showed Thursday.

An average of 130,745 people per day used the station in southern Seoul during the first half of this year. The next most popular was Seoul Station on Line 1, at the center of the capital, with 105,000 users followed by Jamsil Station on Line 2 in southeastern Seoul, with 97,000 users, according to the data compiled by the Seoul Metro and Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corp., which operate the city’s eight subway lines.

Magok Station on Line 5, in the western part of the city, had an average of only 904 daily users, the smallest number of the city‘s subway stations, which is largely attributed to a delay in the development of its neighborhood, according to the operators.

The number of legal free riders under the country’s welfare program rose by 3 percent on-year to average 249,000 per day for subway Lines 1 to 4, and up by 5.4 percent to 397,000 users for Lines 5 to 8 for the first six months of the year, the data showed.

Senior citizens aged 65 or older, disabled people and those considered of “national merit” who have contributed to the country, such as war veterans, are allowed to ride the subway for free.

The deficit incurred by the welfare program amounted to roughly 131 billion won ($115.8 million), according to the data. At present, the basic fare for a trip is 1,050 won.

“With the opening of new subway lines linking the capital city to suburban regions, an increased number of senior citizens seem to have enjoyed free riding more often than before,” a Seoul Metro official said. (Yonhap News)

올 상반기 서울에서 가장 붐빈 지하철역은 2호 선 강남역으로 나타났다.

2일 서울메트로와 도시철도공사에 따르면 올 상반기 하루 평균 이용객이 가장 많은 지하철역은 2호선 강남역(13만745명)으로, 지난해에 이어 1위를 지켰다.

1호선 서울역(10만5천명)과 2호선 잠실역(9만7천명)이 뒤를 이었다.

이용객이 가장 적은 곳은 지역 개발이 지체되고 있는 5호선 마곡역(904명)이었으며, 2호선 도림천역(1천575명), 신답역(1천776명)도 비교적 한산했다.

같은 기간 수송인원이 가장 늘어난 역은 4호선 동작역으로, 하루평균 3천989명 에서 4천674명으로 17.2% 증가했다.

반면 3호선 지축역은 하루평균 수송인원이 2천714명에서 2천218명으로 18.3% 줄었다. 2호선 아현역(11%), 3호선 금호역(6.7%)과 고속터미널역(6.4%), 양재역(5.03% )도 이용객이 감소했다.

지축역은 보금자리주택 개발, 아현역은 뉴타운 개발, 금호역은 주택재개발이 이뤄지는 곳으로, 주변 지역의 여건 변화가 수송감소로 이어졌다고 메트로는 설명했다.

고속터미널역은 지하상가, 동대입구역은 장충체육관 리모델링이 영향을 미친 것으로 분석됐다.

상반기 수송인원이 가장 많았던 날은 어린이날 하루 전 금요일이었던 5월4일로 집계됐다.

이날 1~4호선은 521만6천명(하루평균 대비 124.7%), 5~8호선은 313만6천명(하루 평균 대비 123.8%)을 수송했다.

3월부터 주5일제 수업이 전면 시행됨에 따라 토요일 지하철을 이용하는 청소년 수가 대폭 감소한 것으로 나타났다.

1~4호선의 경우 3~6월 중 토요일 청소년 이용객이 지난해 하루평균 34만4천427 명에서 올해 26만6천554명으로 22.6%나 줄었다.

만 65세 이상 노인, 장애인, 국가유공자를 대상으로 하는 무임수송도 증가했다.

올해 상반기 5~8호선의 무임수송 인원은 하루 평균 24만9천명으로 지난해 같은 기간보다 5.4% 늘었다. 1~4호선도 올해 하루 평균 무임수송 인원이 전체 수송인원의 12.9%인 39만7천명으로, 지난해 상반기보다 3% 증가했다.

이를 실제 운임으로 환산하면 1천310억8천400만원이라고 양 공사는 밝혔다.

도시철도공사 관계자는 “작년보다 맑은 날이 많았고 경의선과 경춘선 등 교외선 이 잇따라 개통해 노인들의 교외나들이가 증가한 것으로 보인다”고 설명했다.

경로승차 비율이 가장 높은 역은 1호선 제기동 역으로, 일일 평균 승차인원이 8천31명(40.9%)으로 나타났다.
