Korea ranked among the lowest group in the world in gender equality, a report showed Wednesday, indicating that it needs to step up efforts to bolster women’s economic participation and their access to education.

According to the report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Korea came in at 108th out of 135 countries it surveyed in terms of gender equality this year.

The ranking was one notch lower than the previous year and it was also similar to countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Nigeria and Bahrain.

The report analyzed the gender equality situations of each country based on 14 indices reflecting access to opportunities, life expectancy and the number of female cabinet members in their governments. The WEF has released such rankings every year since 2006. Korea lagged far behind other courtiers, in particular, in terms of women’s access to economic participation and education level. It ranked 116th and 99th in each area.

한국사회의 성(性) 평등 수준이 세계 135개국 가운데 108위로 나타났다.

세계경제포럼(WEF)이 23일(현지시간) 발표한 보고서에 따르면 올해 135개 조사대상국 중 한국의 성평등 순위는 108위로 지난해(107위)보다 한 계단 하락했다. 아랍에미리트(107위), 쿠웨이트(109위), 나이지리아(110위), 바레인(111위) 등 아랍·아프리카 국가들과 비슷한 수준이다.

보고서에서는 자원 및 기회로의 접근, 임산부 사망률, 기대수명, 여성 각료 숫자 등 14개 지표를 토대로 각국 순위를 매겼다. 지표별로 보면 한국의 여성 경제참여도와 참여기회 지수는 116위였고 교육정도 지수(99위)와 건강·생존 지수(78위), 정치력 지수(86위)도 하위권에 머물렀다.

세계 성 평등 순위 1~3위는 아이슬란드(1위), 핀란드(2위), 노르웨이(3위) 등 북유럽 3국이 차지했다. 최하위권은 아프리카 차드(133위), 파키스탄(134위), 예멘(135위) 등이었다. 아시아태평양 지역에서는 뉴질랜드(6위), 필리핀(8위), 호주(25위), 스리랑카(39위), 몽골(44위) 등의 순으로 높았으며 중국은 69위, 일본도 101위에 그쳤다.

보고서에서는 "성 균성 균형이 경제성장과 안정의 근본 요소다. 지난 10년 간 유럽경제가 성장할 수 있었던 것은 바로 남녀의 고용 격차를 줄인 덕분이었다"고 평가했다. 또 "성 격차를 없애면 선진국에도 엄청난 경제적 영향을 끼친다"며 "미국의 경우 국내총생산(GDP)의 9%, 유로존은 GDP의 13%를 끌어올리는 효과가 있었다"고 말했다.
