The researchers conducted the experiment with mice, giving mice electric shocks while a loud noise was played. It showed that they got freeze when the only noise was played as they associate the noise with shocks while they lost their fear when the drug called BDNF(Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) was given, the journal Science reported.
The function of the drug shown was similar to ¡®extinction training¡¯, the psychological technique that makes phobia sufferers get numb on trauma they have endured by repeating the exposure to that, it added.
The researchers said although the drug did not completely erase the bad memories, it brought sense of safety and positivity that helped sufferers deal with painful memories.
They added that the results would serve as a foothold for further study as it discovered the behaviors of the cells that phobia sufferers endure.
BDNF is naturally produced in the brain, and the experiment showed that rats with less BDNF struggled to overwrite bad memories, which is suspected to contribute to post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as other psychological problems, it said.
Dr Thomas Insel of the National Institute of Mental Health, which financed the research said: ¡®Many lines of evidence implicate BDNF in mental disorders.
¡®This work supports the idea that medications could be developed to augment the effects of BDNF, providing opportunities for pharmaceutical treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and other anxiety disorders.¡¯

But the field is not without critics, who claim that reviewing bad memories is essential as we are to learn from mistakes sometimes.
