Females entering traditionally male-dominated industries
July 05, 2010
The number of working women in Korea is increasing in traditionally male-dominated industries such as medicine and politics, according to a report released yesterday by Statistics Korea.

The report¡¯s release coincides with Women¡¯s Week. Held from July 1 to 7 every year, the week was designated by the government in 1996 in a bid to promote gender equality.

According to the report, the number of women entering the field of medicine has increased more than in any other field in recent years. For example, 21.6 percent of medical doctors were female as of 2008 while 15.7 percent of Oriental medicine doctors were female, as were 24.5 percent of dentists.

In 1980, only 13.6 percent of dentists were female. That figure increased slightly to 14.6 percent in 1990 and 17.6 percent in 2000. Meanwhile, only 2.4 percent of Oriental medicine doctors were female in 1980; the number rose to 5.9 percent in 1990 and 11.1 percent in 2000.

There are also more women in politics. As of March, 20.3 percent of regional lawmakers are female, which is an increase from 2.2 percent in 1995. Also, 48.8 percent of those passing the foreign service exam were female in 2009, while 46.7 percent of those who passed the civil service exam were female. In addition, 35.6 percent of those passing the judicial exam were female.

At the National Assembly, 13.7 percent, or 41, of the legislative body¡¯s 299 lawmakers are female, an increase from only three in 1992.

The number of women admitted to college has also increased. As of 2009, 82.4 percent of women applying for college were admitted, outpacing for the first time in history the 81.6 percent recorded for men.

The proportion of the population that is female has risen as well. Of Korea¡¯s 48.9 million people, 49.8 percent, or 24.3 million, were female as of March, a 4.3 percent increase compared to 2000.
