John: You know what， May? I just can't stand Cathy. I've never really liked her to begin with， but ever since she's become the manager， I just find her so annoying. May: Why do you say that? John: She's always complaining about something. Today she was complaining that the cleaning lady didn't clean the vending machine. I just can't understand why that matters so much to her. I mean， who cares about the vending machine? May: Well， I don't like a complainer， but doesn't somebody have to complain to make things better sometimes? John: But she does it all the time! May: Don't be too harsh on her， John. Maybe she's under too much stress these days. I know she sounds mean sometimes， but her heart is in the right place.
* can't stand ~: ~을 견딜 수 없다 즉， 무엇인가를 아주 싫다고 할 때 쓰는 표현. * to begin with: 처음부터， 시작할 때부터 * annoying: 신경에 거슬리는 * vending machine: 자판기 * matter: ~ 가 문제가 되다 * harsh: 심한 * has one's heart in the right place: 직역하면 '심성이 바른 곳에 있다' 라는 의미이므로 이 말은 누군가의 본심이 나쁜 것은 아니라는 뜻이다.

John:그녀는 항상 뭔가에 대해서 불평을 해. 오늘은 청소하는 아주머니가 자판기를 청소하지 않았다고 불평을 늘어 놓더라고. 난 도대체 왜 그런 것들이 그렇게 중요한지 이해를 할 수가 없어. 내 말은 도대체 누가 자판기에 신경을 쓰느냔 말이야. May: 글쎄， 나도 불평하는 사람은 좋아하지 않지만， 무언가를 더 낫게 만들려면 누군가는 불평을 해야 하지 않을까? John: 하지만 캐시는 항상 그런다고. May: 그녀한테 너무 심하게 그러지 마. 어쩌면 요즘 너무 스트레스를 많이 받아서 그럴지도 몰라. 좀 인정머리 없이 보일 때가 있는 건 사실이지만 캐시도 본성은 착한 사람이라고.
